Many thanks for your most interesting

despatch of the 11th of June, and your letter of the

8th of June, about the possibility of negotiating

with the Chinese Government for the sale, or for the

extension of the lease, of the New Territories.

I shall lose no time in having the whole

question examined here in consultation with the

Foreign Office and the Service Departments, and I

shall then be able to let you know the decision

reached by His Majesty's Government and the grounds

for it.
